Speak Life!

My class was getting a little crazy! The students were "smack talking" each other and thinking it was ok to be sarcastic and poke fun at each other. If you know me, you know that I'm not really a sarcastic person. I don't think it is a pure or funny humour. Anyways, to combat the "smack talk" I decided to share a song with my class. The song "Speak Life" by Toby Mac has been on Praise Radio for the last while, and after checking the lyrics I realized it would be suitable for the my class.

The words say that "we can watch someone come alive when [we] speak hope, [we] speak love, [we] speak LIFE." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rK6O0YtBRY

Now this idea has taken off! The kids love it!!! When I play this song they belt it out and I love hearing them. Since the beginning of the year, I have encouraged my students to make personal goals. We say, "I can _________" and then fill in the blank. The latest thing is that my students are saying "I can speak life when we are in PE, or I can speak to life to someone in another class at lunch time." It is truly amazing how the spirit of hope, joy and encouragement has had such an affect on the class. I've seen little "A's" smile finally come out! Since September I had never seen him smile. Now this guy is laughing and smiling! What a difference.

"Use your words to inspire...."

*I'm so grateful for this song! Let me know if you know of any more songs like this that might be suitable for my class.
